Breaking up is hard. It’s even harder when it’s not a real breakup.

—Audrey

Seeing Trevor standing beside my car after walking out of the restaurant doesn’t surprise me. It does, however, piss me off.

“What’s up, Trev?” I clip out as I approach.

“Just making sure everything’s okay.”

“Why wouldn’t it be okay?”

“Didn’t think the date was gonna go well. Thought I’d wait and get you home safely.” He reaches out an arm as a prompt for me to hug him.

I don’t comply.

“As you can see, I’m in one piece and doing just fine. Now, go home.”

“I care, Audrey,” he says with a face like a sad puppy.

“I know you do. But you can’t keep doing this.”

He stares with that dopey face of his.

“You can’t keep showing up on my dates or calling me during them or stalking me afterward.”

More dopey staring.

“The truth is, Trevor, that I think we need a little space.”

“Space?”

I nod. “I love you and you’re my best friend and we spend a lot of time together, but I need to be my own person. It’s always been you, me, and Robby. I’ve never really had the chance to be me without you.”

“I don’t understand. It’s not like we live together or are married or anything.”

“See, that’s the thing. It’s almost like we are. We have Robby, so we’re always going to be tied together and spend a lot of time as a family. And I love that and I love Robby more than anything and I can’t imagine not being his mom. But my entire short adult life has been that.”

“A mom?”

“Yeah, that. And your partner and going to school and working. I want a little more time for me. And not like when I hang with the girls and do stupid stuff and make bad decisions.”

Trevor’s eyes go wide.

“I don’t want to make bad decisions anymore. I want to do good things. I want to do things that I want to do and date guys I want to date and fall in love the right way.”

“There’s a right way?”

“Yes, Trevor. There is a right way, and I want to follow it.”

“I can help you.”

“Oh, jeez.” I throw my hands in the air. “Are you even listening to me?”

“Yes.”

“No, you aren’t because I just said I want to do things my way from now on. I want to do them on my own.”

“I hate to break it to you, little one, but you’re never going to be on your own with me around.”

“Then, maybe you shouldn’t be around so much,” I say quickly.

His head snaps in my direction. “What?”

“I mean, maybe you shouldn’t be everywhere I am or track me on your phone like a stalker or call and text me a hundred times a day.”

“I’ll never not do that stuff, Audrey.”

I grab Trevor’s hands. “You need to. I need you to.”

“God, why do I feel like you’re breaking up with me?”

“I’ve never broken up with you. It was the other way around.”

“And I regret it.”

“I don’t need a breakup with you.
